Sabrina Gschwandtner has exhibited her artwork internationally, in the context of solo gallery shows and group exhibitions at museums including "alt_quilts: Sabrina Gschwandtner, Luke Haynes, Stephen Sollins" at the American Folk Art Museum (2013); "Sabrina Gschwandtner: Sunshine and Shadow" at the Philadelphia Art Alliance (2013): "40 Under 40" at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (2012); "Power of Making" at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2011); "Hand+Made" at Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston (2010); Bucharest Biennale IV (2010); and "Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting" and "Pricked: Extreme Embroidery" at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York (both 2007), among many others.
She has lectured on her work at art schools, universities, and museums worldwide, including Harvard University; the Rhode Island School of Design; the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London; Bergen National Academy of the Arts, Norway, and the Museum of World Culture, Sweden, among many others.
Her work has been featured and reviewed in the New York Times, Modern Painters, Artforum.com, Frieze, Cabinet, the Washington Post, Der Standard, and on NPR and Bloomberg News, among other media outlets and scholarly publications.
She has been awarded residencies at Wave Hill (2012), the International Artists Studio Program in Sweden (IASPIS, 2009), the Museum of Arts and Design (2009), and the MacDowell Colony (2007 and 2004).
Her work is held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the RISD Museum, the Philbrook Museum of Art, and other public and private collections worldwide. She is represented by LMAKprojects in New York.
Gschwandtner was born in Washington DC in 1977. She received a BA with honors in art/semiotics from Brown University (2000) and an MFA from Bard College (2008). She lives in Brooklyn, NY and works out of a studio in Manhattan. She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at New York University and Parsons the New School for Design, and has also taught classes and workshops at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design, and the Textile Arts Center, among others.
From 2002-7 she edited and published the 'zine KnitKnit, which is now in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library, and the Fine Arts Library, Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University.
