José Pérez de Arce


Musician, visual artist, archeomusicologist and ethnomusicologist born in Santiago, Chile, l950. The author of many important books such as:
La Música en la Piedra, Museo Chileno de Arte Preclombino, l995.
La Música Mapuche, Fondo Nacional de Fomento del Libro y la Lectura, Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes, 2007.
Faces of Pre-Columbian Chile, 1997, Banco Santander, Chile.

He has produced many recordings of his music, which incorporate ancient pre-Columbian instruments and sounds including SON IDO and Nometomesencuenta. His music has created a new improvisatory language of fusion. He has investigated the history and sound of the guitarrón chileno, a unique instrument related to the guitar. He is a master performer of this instrument. As a composer, he created the music for KON KON, a film by Cecilia Vicuña, and collaborated with Claudio Mercado in the creation of the music for PARACAS, another film by Cecilia Vicuña. He co-founded, along with Claudio Mercado, the legendary musical group La Chimuchina in l982.The group has performed around the world. More recently, he co-founded, along with his children, an offspring of La Chimuchina: La Pichimuchina. He currently works as a museologist and researcher at the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino in Santiago.
